Having experienced the emotions of divorce, I know telling you not to fear can seem patronizing or shallow so let’s get real. Fear is perhaps the most prevailing emotion associated with divorce. Fear of change, fear of the future, fear of being alone, fears for your children, and the list goes on. Some days just getting out of bed can seem scary. Fear rattles your cage and makes you desperate for a sense of security.
Yet, the sense of security we crave can seem most elusive. It’s hard to find in surrounding circumstances because of the losses and unknowns of divorce. Taking a deep breath can help for a second but the power, stability, and sense of safety we need only come from opening ourselves to a power larger than ourselves and our circumstances.
Our Most Powerful Way to Conquer Fear
So you have not received a spirit that makes you fearful slaves. Instead, you received God’s Spirit when he adopted you as his own children. Now we call him, ‘Abba, Father.’ For his Spirit joins with our spirit to affirm that we are God’s children.” Romans 8: 15-16
When circumstances get us down it is so easy to forget the power that is within us to battle the fears we feel. As Christians our spirits have joined with God’s Spirit. We can cry out “Abba, Father” to God and ask that his Holy Spirit alleviate our fears and settle our nerves.
Ask God to carry your burdens and settle your spirit. Trying to find peace on your own pretty much ensures that peace will be allusive. Thank God you have access to the power of the Holy Spirit.
The Truth about Letting Go of Fear
God hears your prayers and offers you peace. Yet, since you’re human you may find it hard to let go of your fears. Many of us find it easy to give our troubles to God, well sort of, and then take them back and worry anyway. Sound familiar?
I’ve found letting go of my fear isn’t just a one-time thing. I have to keep choosing to give my fears to God every time they arise. God understands this and the Holy Spirit eases my stress every time despite my frailties.
Perhaps this is one of the many reasons God hates divorce. He knows the fear it causes. He understands and has not abandoned you. Choose to rest at peace in God’s protective care. Ask the Holy Spirit to set you free of fear.
Praying for your victory,
Renee
