You Can Build a Support Network to Help You Deal with Divorce
Family members and long-time friends can be valuable anchors as you process your divorce. Even so, you may need to extend your support network. When divorce is your reality it can be easy to overwhelm others with your needs as you cope and work to heal. It’s helpful to find more than one person you can talk with so that you don’t end up burning out any one friend. You’ll get more support.
How do you build a support network?
Joining organizations can help to expand your circle of friends and provide added support. Getting involved with a church is another good way to find fellowship as well as general spiritual support. Community classes and activities can also put you in touch with others.
Support groups related to divorce recovery can be particularly helpful. Look for those that guide you through a healing process as well as provide an opportunity to talk with others who have experienced divorce. Personal counseling is yet another option.
As you establish your support network, be sure to find people who will help you grow. People who pull you down are not candidates for your support network. Seek out people who lift your spirits.
Do you find yourself responsible for tasks that used to be handled by your spouse? You can build a support network there too. Seek out resources to help you learn how to handle those newly required responsibilities. Build a support network that allows you to work independently of your ex and you’ll gain a new sense of self confidence.
A key element in any support network is a relationship with God. Jesus promises, “And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age” (Matthew 28:20 NIV). Talk with God in your own words. You’ll find a friend who listens tirelessly and who has empathy for your pain. You’ll also find the only one who can truly fulfill the desires of your soul.
In what ways can you extend your personal support network?
Christian Thoughts for Today
Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up. Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 (NIV)
Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you your heart’s desires. Psalm 37:4
