Divorce: Have I Lost Favor with God?
I never consciously thought about it until now. But, deep in my heart I realize I’ve been wondering if my divorce lowers me in God’s eyes. I feel like a failure so surely God must see me as a failure too.”
As a Christian, you know that divorce is not what God wants for your marriage. Divorce is not to be taken lightly. Marriages are designed by God as a life-time covenant.
But, do you need to hang your head around God? Are you second-rate in his eyes? Does he frown when he looks your way?
I contend that God’s love for you prevails.
For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not as result of works, so that no one may boast.
Ephesians 2:8-9
Have faith in God. He offers you grace. It’s that simple.
- Tell God what’s in your heart. He’s listening. God still loves you.
- Feel God’s love. Are you in pain? Whether you feel the pain of knowing you caused your divorce or the pain of having been left by your spouse, God is close to the brokenhearted (Psalm 34:18 NIV)
- Seek any forgiveness you need. Do you feel guilty? God forgives the transgressions of those who turn to him and sincerely ask for forgiveness. (2 Corinthians 5:18-19 ESV)
- Know God has a good plan for you. Walk closely with Him and He will show you the way. (Jeremiah 29:11-13 NIV)
You don’t have to hang your head around God.
He knows the pain you are going through. He cares.
If your marriage has ended, focusing on your failure to meet God’s ideal for marriage denies the love of God as expressed through the death and resurrection of Christ.
