Putting the Light Back in Your Heart when a Marriage Ends
I have come into the world as a light,
so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness.
John 12:46 NIV
“I had just given birth to our first child,” says Roseanne. “I was still in the
hospital when in walked my husband saying he wanted a divorce.”
In an instant the darkness of divorce fell on Roseanne. Sometimes the end of a marriage comes like that. For others the darkness of divorce seeps in slowly as a marriage crumbles and fades.
Yes, having your marriage fail hurts, but you don’t have to stay in the darkness of divorce forever.
Moving Past the Darkness…
Your thoughts play a major role in determining how well and how quickly you can move out of the darkness of divorce. Self-defeating thoughts will keep you in darkness and promote self-defeating behaviors. Such Darkness Thoughts steal the light from your heart by leaving you feeling like a victim.
On the other hand, In-the-Light Thoughts create an empowering mindset that inspires healthy personal growth and draw minds closer to the healing, joy, and peace that are consistent with the promises of God. In-the-Light Thoughts cast darkness from your heart and allow you to draw on the love of Christ to do so.
In-the-Light Thoughts are more than candy-coated positive thoughts.
Many people are surprised to learn that they can choose to replace Darkness Thoughts with In-the-Light Thoughts. It is truly possible. You can monitor your thoughts and consciously choose which you will allow to stay in your brain and influence your future.
My Challenge to You…
Be Determined – When Darkness Thoughts surface look squarely at them and tell them they are done darkening your days with worry, fear, anger, resentment and self-doubt. Tell them, “I believe. I believe that Jesus came into the world so that I don’t have to stay in darkness.”
Get Specific – Make a list of your Darkness Thoughts. For each of those thoughts, write down an In-the-Light Thought that you can turn to when you need it to replace a given Darkness Thought.
Here’s an example:
Darkness Thought: I feel like my life is over.
In-the-Light Thought: I’m overwhelmed and sad but I know I will get through this. God offers me a future and a hope. It says so in Jeremiah 29:11.
The Good News…
- Switching from Darkness Thoughts to In-the-Light Thoughts takes prayer and practice but it is possible and well worth it.
- Because In-the-Light Thoughts are in line with God, they always have the power to conquer Darkness Thoughts. Now that’s really good news!
