At the End of Your Rope?
Maggie’s anxiety rang throughout our conversation. She had reached a low point. Weary and worn from her husband’s antagonistic behavior she was beginning to wonder how much more she could take. She said she knew God was with her but sometimes it was hard to feel his presence. She felt very alone in her struggles. Divorce can be like that.
“Who will protect me from the wicked?” asks Psalms 94:16. “Who will stand up for me against evildoers?”
The Psalmist felt much the same as Maggie. They both hit a lonely low and wanted to be rescued. Yet despite a sense of desperation, Maggie like the Psalmist knew deep inside that even in the low times God is still there.
In the next two verses the Psalmist reaffirms his faith by saying, “Unless the Lord had helped me, I would soon have settled in the silence of the grave. I cried out, ‘I am slipping!’ but your unfailing love, O Lord, supported me. When doubts filled my mind, your comfort gave me renewed hope and cheer.” (NLT)
When doubts fill your mind, know that God is still there. He has compassion for you in your suffering. That does not mean your trials will suddenly vanish. But it does mean that you can know deep in your heart that God is there for you, even when he seems far away. Reaffirm your faith. Be quiet. Whisper his name in faith and ask for peace.
Christian Thought:
In the multitude of my anxieties within me, your comforts delight my soul.
