Get Out of the Pit of Despair
He lifted me out of the pit of despair, out of the mud and the mire. He set my feet on solid ground and steadied me as I walked along. Psalm 40:2
Divorce brought so many changes into my life that I felt like I was drowning. Everything I thought I knew to be true seemed challenged. Trust was broken. Finances uncertain. Relationships changed. Dreams were shattered. Stability evaporated. My world was rocked.
As much as I felt like life was over…it wasn’t. Really. I began to realize that I did not want to be tossed about in the debris of divorce forever. If I was going to get my life together, I had some choices to make and a lot of praying to do. To start with, I had to learn to embrace change and see its potential. Embracing change meant…
- Letting go of my former spouse
- Letting go of the past
- Trying to figure out what I could learn from current challenges and experiences
- Becoming independent and prayerfully self-directed.
Embracing change meant looking at my circumstances with a new mind-set. None of this happened overnight but day-by-day I took on a fresh outlook. Step-by-step I discovered methods for processing my past, coping with my present, and looking to a brighter future. Healing from divorce became possible.
Your Challenge
So I challenge you today, look at the four bulleted items above and decide which you most need to work on this week. Next, choose one to three actions you can take to move toward healing in this area. Here’s an example: I will let go of the past by no longer concentrating on my losses.
- When I find myself starting to dwell on my losses I will stop myself.
- I will take each thought of loss individually and give it to God to heal.
- I will consciously replace each thought about loss with a thought about something that is good in my life.
Talk with God
God, I’m letting go of my sense of loss and turning it over to you. I thank you for these blessings in my life.” [List those things that are good in your life.] Help me to see the positive future you have planned for me and to trust you.
