Where is God? Did He Leave Me Because of Divorce?
No. God doesn’t leave us. God is there. God is with you, right now.
But, I understand the feeling because there were times when my marriage was ending that I too found it hard to feel God’s presence.
But, God was there.
I think we know divorce isn’t in God’s plan and that knowledge hangs in our heads and muddles our spirits. We assume God is mad at us or we feel guilty for divorce even when it isn’t what we would choose. If you’ve made mistakes, ask God for forgiveness. Know that he is full of mercy and grace. He wants to be there for you in a big way.
That doesn’t mean everything in your life will go perfectly. Why? Because we are human in a fallen world. You have free will and so does your ex or soon-to-be ex.
Choices will be made that don’t have the outcomes you want. Even so, God will see your through. He will be your rock in troubled times. He will strengthen you and restore your spirit.
Sometimes we have so much noise in our own lives that our ears can’t hear the tender whisper of his voice. Trust that he is carrying you nonetheless. When you can’t even find the words to pray, sit in silence before Him and the Holy Spirit will pray for you.
Rather than seeking answers from God, seek to know him better. We are told if we seek Him first, the rest will be added. Know that God is still there.
Please rest assured that nothing keeps you from the love, grace, and mercy of God! Not even divorce.
Christian Inspiration:
In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. Romans 8:26 NIV
For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 8:38-39 NIV

Part of this post first appeared as a reply to a question in my online group.
We tend to think in relation to love and marriage, feelings scream the loudest and seem most important. However, to me they are unreliable in terms of the human reality and God’s reality. Although feelings may want to drive our decisions and behaviors, we should depend on better, factual, and Godly yardsticks.
Kent, I agree that feelings do scream the loudest when we’re dealing with something as emotional as divorce. That’s pretty human. If you’re suggesting that feelings can sometimes block our ability to hear God I agree with that too. It can take conscious effort to refocus our minds to God’s promises and to intentionally make prayerful decisions. Thanks for commenting.
